Estimated from 19th century, museum quality article, antique wooden carved makiri sheath with knife with fine and beautiful aged patina. This makiri is in very good in condition. It has been refered this Makiri to Mingu Zuroku, Ainu craft illustrated book, by Tsutomu Ito, a prominent ainu craft scholar. The book comes with this makiri.
The sheaths of makir knives were carved ususually from topeni (maple),neshiko (walnut) and other woods. Owners carved personal patterns distinctive of the Ainu on the sheaths and attached ornaments of great originality. Makiri were an inseparable part of the Ainu wardrobe and were carefully worn from the owner's belt everywhere he went.
